Lawn Tips for Winter Dormancy

The shorter days signify the waning growing season. Winter dormancy is quickly approaching your lawn. With it, you can expect a new appearance and set of maintenance requirements. Here are a few tips to keep your lawn healthy throughout winter.

1. Mowing

Shorter days and cooler temperatures trigger your lawn to go dormant. This translates to a brown yard that grows much slower. Thus, weekly mowings are no longer necessary. In fact, it can be detrimental. It is best to mow once a month or even halt mowing altogether until spring returns. Continue to mow at the appropriate height for your grass type.

St.Augustine: 3-4 inches
Bermuda/Zoysia: 1-2 inches

2. Watering

Grass still needs ample soil moisture during the winter months. Watering 1 time a week should satisfy moisture requirements in your soil. If regular rainfall is occurring, turning off and winterizing your irrigation system is recommended.

Sprays: 10-15 minutes per zone
Rotors: 20-30 minutes per zone
Beds: 10 minutes per zone

5.     Winterizing

Winterizing your lawn is one of the most effective steps you can take to ensure a strong, vibrant yard when spring arrives. During the colder months, grass shifts its energy from growing blades to strengthening and repairing its root system. We applied a winterizing fertilizer to support this natural process by delivering nutrients that protect your lawn through dormancy.

Why Winterizing Matters

  • Strengthens Root Systems: Winter fertilizers are typically higher in potassium, which helps roots become more resilient against cold temperatures, drought, and disease.

  • Builds Energy Reserves: Even though the grass isn’t actively growing above the surface, the roots continue to store nutrients. This stored energy fuels early spring green-up.

  • Improves Stress Tolerance: A properly winterized lawn can better withstand sudden temperature drops, frost, and dry winter winds.

  • Promotes a Smoother Spring Transition: When spring returns, winterized lawns bounce back faster, with richer color and denser growth.

Using these tips will give your lawn the best shot of making it through winter and entering into spring healthy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us at 281-375-5100.
