Fall Watering Guide

As August comes to a close, now is the time to decrease watering. Summer irrigation schedules lead to many problems in the fall such as brown patch fungus and excessive weeds. Here is a quick guide to watering as we enter a new season.

(Disclaimer: These recommendations are based upon our experience and the guidelines of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. If you feel there are issues with your irrigation system, please contact a licensed irrigator.)

How long and often should I water?

How long you run each irrigation zone depends on the type of sprinkler head.

Lawn Sprays: Run for 10-15 minutes per zone

Lawn Rotors: Run for 20-30 minutes per zone

Shrub Sprays: Run for 5-10 minutes per zone.

During the Fall, water your yard 1-2 times per week. This is important to reduce the risk of brown patch, root rot, and excessive weeds. Watering should be done as infrequently but deeply as possible in order to avoid these issues while simultaneously encouraging deeper roots.

These are general guidelines and will not work for every yard. Soil type and conditions unique to your property will affect run times. If you see excessive ponding, runoff or dry areas, please adjust accordingly.

Sprays vs Rotors

Sprays are irrigation heads that pop up and diffuse water in a flat fan pattern. They are often found in flower beds or small sections of your yard. Spray zones are stationary and therefore deliver more water to an area quicker than rotors. This is why we run these zones for less time.

Rotors or rotary nozzles are irrigation heads that rotate in order to cover a larger area of lawn. They are commonly found in large open areas, such as your backyard. Rotors are characterized by a high pressure, single rotating stream while rotary nozzles have multiple thin rotating streams. Due to the larger coverage of these heads, we must run them for longer.

If you want to have a healthy lawn this Fall, adjusting your watering schedule is crucial. Proper watering management is the key to unlocking your yard’s potential. While you manage the water, we manage the grass. See you for your next application soon!
