Fall Fungus in Your St.Augustine and Zoysia Lawn!
As late summer turns to early fall, rain, humidity and cooler temperatures all come together to create the perfect environment for lawn diseases, particularly brown patch.
Brown patch is a fungus commonly found in St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns. It can be identified by a circular brown spot with a yellow/orange perimeter. This orange perimeter is an indicator that the fungus is actively growing. If left untreated, the brown patch will grow in size for as long as conditions allow.
How Can You Prevent Brown Patch?
That being said, there are many factors you can control to prevent brown patch. Here are a few tips.
-
Water in the morning and less frequently
By watering your lawn in the morning rather than the evening, you allow the sun to dry the grass. Watering in the late evening or overnight often leads to areas of your lawn that stay wet for hours. This is conducive to brown patch development. Be sure to also reduce water frequency. 2 days a week will suffice for most lawns.
-
Apply a fungicide
We will apply a fungicide to work preventatively and curatively. Our quality fungicide will give you up to 28 days of control. After 28 days, a second application may be necessary and can be requested by calling our office. If the brown patch is active, fungicides simply stop the growth. They do not make your grass green. It will take time for your lawn to grow out of brown patch damage.
-
Mow properly
Proper mowing practices are also important when dealing with disease and lawn health in general. Mowing St. Augustine at a higher height (3-4”) and making sure your blades are sharp is crucial to having a stronger, disease resistant lawn. Shorter cuts cause more stress to your lawn. A stressed lawn is more vulnerable to extensive damage from disease. To further prevent spread of disease, bagging and removing infected grass clippings off the property is also beneficial.
