Spring into Action: May Lawn & Landscape Tips

With May here, the growing season is officially underway! Warmer temperatures mean it's time for thick, green grass, blooming flowers, and beautifully maintained landscape beds. A well-kept yard doesn’t just look good—it turns heads. Here are a few simple ways to take full advantage of the season.

Water Wisely

A lush lawn starts with smart watering. The key? Water deeply but infrequently. Even with rising temperatures, watering five to seven days a week does more harm than good. Instead, stick to no more than three days a week, and ensure even coverage across your entire lawn and beds.

Here are our recommended irrigation run times:

● Rotors: 20–30 minutes per zone
● Sprays: 10–15 minutes per zone
● Beds: 5–10 minutes per zone
Best time to water: Between 4–8 AM

Mow Like a Pro

Once watering is under control, your next focus should be mowing. Sharp mower blades are essential—dull blades tear the grass, leaving it stressed and uneven. Mowing frequency is also very important. So how often should you mow?

● At least once per week for most lawns
● Every 3–4 days for Bermuda grass (not necessary, but beneficial)
Mowing height also plays a major role in lawn health. Here are our general guidelines:
● Bermuda: 1–2"
● Zoysia: 1–2"
● St. Augustine: 3–4"
The shorter the cut, the more frequently you should mow.

Other Lawn Enhancements

Take your lawn and landscape to the next level with these seasonal tasks:
Resodding Bare Areas
1. Remove grass, weeds, and debris
2. Amend soil if needed (compost/topsoil/sand)
3.Till the surface and dampen it
4. Lay sod in a staggered, brick-like pattern
5. Keep sod moist for several weeks
6. Wait to mow until it’s rooted and 3–4" tall

Leveling Low Spots

● Use masonry sand or play sand to fill small divots and uneven areas
● Mow low before applying
● Apply no more than ½” of sand
● Use a lawn leveling rake to distribute sand evenly
● Water daily until the grass grows through
● Apply fertilizer afterward for faster recovery
This method is best for minor low areas, not large holes. Too much sand can smother the grass and cause damage

Re-Mulching Beds & Trees

● Adds instant curb appeal
● Helps retain soil moisture
● Apply 2" of pine bark mulch evenly throughout beds
● Avoid piling mulch directly around plant or tree bases

Make the Most of Your Yard

Spring is the perfect time to elevate your yard’s health and appearance. Whether it’s fine-tuning your irrigation, sharpening up your mowing routine, or refreshing your landscape beds, small improvements can yield big results. Start now, and enjoy the rewards all season long.
