Why use pre-emergent in the fall?

Fall is the time of year when spring weeds begin germinating. It is also the time when grass growth begins to slow down, making it more susceptible to weeds. This is why a fall pre-emergent is crucial to managing a lawn. Controlling the germination of weeds now will
ultimately affect the health of your lawn throughout winter and even into spring.

What is a pre-emergent?

Pre-emergents are products designed to prevent weeds. When applied, a barrier is created between the soil surface and subsurface. When a weed seed attempts to develop roots, it comes into contact with this barrier and is thwarted. Many difficult weeds to control with post-emergent herbicides are best prevented with pre-emergents. For example, annual
bluegrass is a particularly troublesome weed to manage once established. However, a large percentage can be prevented with a pre-emergent applied in the fall.

How it fits in our program

By this time, all our yards have been treated with a pre-emergent. We utilize these products, when time appropriate, to prevent as many weeds as possible. Pre-emergents are not perfect. There may be weed breakthroughs. Thus, we utilize post-emergent herbicides in tandem. We aim to stay on top of all weeds to limit competition with your grass. This way, we can ensure a healthy lawn next spring.

What you can do!

Water

We are in a drought. Proper irrigation coverage and ample run times are key to maintaining a healthy lawn. Please water the lawn 2 -3 days a week.
Lawn Sprays: Run for 10-15 minutes per zone
Lawn Rotors: Run for 20-30 minutes per zone.
Shrub Sprays: Run for 5-10 minutes per zone.

Mowing

Here are our recommended mowing heights. Mowing higher will decrease stress on the already drought stricken lawns in our area.
St. Augustine - 3 to 4 inches
Bermuda/ Zoysia - 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches
